Sabelo Mhlambi

Sabelo Mhlambi is a technologist, researcher, and AI ethicist whose work spans the intersection of technology, human rights, and ethics. His research and academic appointments include fellowships at Harvard Law School's Berkman-Klein Center for Internet & Society, Harvard Kennedy School's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, and Stanford's Digital Civil Society Lab. During his four-year fellowship tenure, he developed pioneering frameworks for ethical AI development with a focus on incorporating perspectives from marginalized communities.

Most recently, he founded a Techstars'22 backed AI startup focused on democratizing financial technology access in emerging markets. His earlier work in civic technology included developing anti-censorship software to protect digital rights and freedom of expression. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated expertise in translating complex technical concepts into actionable insights for diverse stakeholders.

Sabelo now focuses on maximizing the societal benefits of large language models while addressing inherent risks related to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear applications, as well as algorithmic bias. He is passionate about creating inclusive technological solutions that prioritize human rights and safety, advocating for underrepresented groups to be both active participants in AI development and equitable beneficiaries of these advances.
