Politico: Could Congress fix AI bias with privacy rules?

Alumni Alice Hau featured in Politico Morning Tech discussing federal privacy bill negotiations:

Congressional balancing act: Alice Hau, a tech policy fellow at the Senate Commerce Committee, said senators are “still wrestling” with whether it makes sense to restrict AI researchers’ access to personal data — and potentially water down the resulting AI’s overall effectiveness and impartiality.

“I think that's very much still an active area of conversation, exactly the right ways that privacy and AI can mix together and how to balance concerns on both ends,” Hau said.

Rep. Zoe Lofrgren (D-Calif.), whose district touches Silicon Valley, suggested a similar discussion on how to balance rapid AI development with strong consumer privacy protections.
