Elizabeth “Liz” Merrigan

Liz Merrigan is a product manager dedicated to advancing meaningful online safety standards for children and teens, intellectual property and privacy protections, and transparency requirements that keep pace with developments in AI. Liz recently led teen content safety for the Facebook App at Meta, building the strategy and roadmap to reduce the distribution of age-inappropriate content to teen users as a Senior Product Manager on the Trust and Safety team. She engaged with engineering, policy, privacy, and legal experts to develop content moderation systems for teens that could operate fairly at scale using the latest AI and machine learning systems.

Liz holds a B.A. in Political Science from Columbia University, and she began her career in technology in Meta’s Rotational Product Manager program with the goal to influence responsible and equitable innovation in a company that serves over 3 billion people. Before focusing on teen online safety, Liz launched an algorithmic transparency product that informed users based in the EU for the first time about demotions, a content moderation tactic that impacted the virality of their content without their knowledge, and enabled them to appeal those actions.

As a product manager, Liz built products to empower and protect users while responding to a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape. She plans to apply that domain expertise to public service by supporting lawmakers to hold social media companies and AI model developers accountable in making their platforms and services safer, more private, and more transparent.
